The number of mobile phones in the reclusive nation of Burma/Myanmar reached 265,912 at the end of 2007 - reports a newly-published local bi-weekly newspaper, citing the state-run Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT).
The paper provided a breakdown of 211,812 for GSM, with 30,390 using CDMA and 23,710 using an older DAMPS network. According to the MPT, GSM phones in Myanmar can roam in 21 townships far up to the border areas also mainly covering Monywa, Mawlamyine, Bagan, Ngwesaung, Chaungtha, Taunggyi, Kyaingtong, Tachilek, Lashio and Muse in addition to Yangon and Mandalay.
The state owned operator doubled its network capacity during the year - although it was not clear who provided the equipment. The original GSM network was provided by Siemens and ZTE.
Some reports have also suggested that the country is about to launch a W-CDMA network - initially covering Yangon and with a capacity for 30,000 subscribers.
Landline phones reached 747,565 by the end of the year.
