ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ လြတ္ေျမာက္ေရး ဆႏၵျပသည့္ အမ်ဳိးသားဒီမိုကေရစီအဖြဲ႕ခ်ဳပ္္ (အန္အယ္လ္ ဒီ) ပါတီ၀င္ (၁၅) ဦးကို ယေန႔ ေန႔လယ္ပိုင္းက လံုထိန္းရဲတပ္ဖြဲ႕က ဖမ္းဆီးသြားေၾကာင္း အန္အယ္လ္ဒီ ဗဟိုဌာနခ်ဳပ္မွ ပါတီ၀င္တဦးက ေျပာသည္။
အဖြဲ႕ခ်ဳပ္လူ၀င္မ်ားသည္ အဖြဲ႕ခ်ဳပ္႐ံုးေရွ႕၌ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ကို ခ်က္ခ်င္းလႊတ္ေပးရန္ ေႂကြးေၾကာ္သံမ်ား ေအာ္ဟစ္ ဆႏၵျပၾကၿပီးေနာက္ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ ေနအိမ္ဘက္သို႔ လမ္းေလွ်ာက္ ဆႏၵျပစဥ္ ဖမ္းဆီးခံရျခင္းျဖစ္သည္။
အန္အယ္လ္ဒီပါတီ၀င္တဦးက “ေန႔ခင္း (၁) နာရီခြဲေလာက္မွာ ကေလးေတြက ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္း စုၾကည္ ခ်က္ခ်င္းလႊတ္ဆိုတဲ့ ဆိုင္းဘုတ္ရယ္၊ ဗိုလ္ခ်ဳပ္ပံုရယ္ ကိုင္ၿပီး အန္တီစု အိမ္ဘက္ကို ေလွ်ာက္သြားၾကတယ္။ အဲဒါကို ကမၻာေအးဘုရားလမ္း ျမရိပ္ညိဳဟုိတယ္နား ႏွင္းဆီကုန္းနား အေရာက္မွာပဲ သူတို႔ကို ဒိုင္နာကားနဲ႔ ဆြဲတင္သြားတယ္။ အန္တီအိမ္နား မေရာက္ခင္မွာဘဲ ဒိုင္နာကားနဲ႔ တင္ခံရတယ္” ဟု ေျပာသည္။
ဖမ္းဆီးခံရသူတို႔မွာ ဒလမွ ေစာျပည့္ၿဖိဳးေအာင္ႏွင့္ ထက္စိုးလင္း၊ မဂၤလာဒံုမွ ထြန္း၀င္းသိန္းႏွင့္ လွမ်ဳိးႏိုင္၊ တြံေတးၿမိဳ႕မွ ဆရာဦးေအာင္ေဖ၊ စမ္းေခ်ာင္းမွ ထြန္းထြန္း၀င္းႏွင့္ ျပည့္ျပည့္၊ တာေမြမွ ေက်ာ္မ်ဳိးႏိုင္ႏွင့္ ၾကည့္ျမင္တုိင္မွ ရန္ႏိုင္ထြန္း၊ ေရႊျပည္သာမွ ထက္ထက္ဦးေ၀နွင့္ ၎၏ သမီး (၁၂) ႏွစ္၊ လိႈင္သာယာမွ ေမာင္ဆန္း (ေခၚ) ဆန္းႏိုင္၊ ေက်ာ္ႏိုင္၊ မ်ဳိးေက်ာ္ဇင္၊ သက္ႏိုင္ထြန္း၊ ခရမ္းမွ ၀င္းျမင့္ေမာင္တို႔ျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း၊ ၎တို႔အား မည္သည့္ေနရာသုိ႔ ေခၚေဆာင္သြားသည္ကို မသိရေသးေသာ္လည္း မရမ္းကုန္းဘက္သို႔ ေခၚေဆာင္သြားေၾကာင္း သိရသည္။
ယေန႔မြန္းလြဲပိုင္း၌ အမ်ဳိးသားဒီမိုကေရစီအဖြဲ႕ခ်ဳပ္က ၁၉၉၀ ျပည့္ ပါတီစံုဒီမုိကေရစီ ေရြးေကာက္ပြဲ အႏိုင္ရသည့္ (၁၈) ႏွစ္ေျမာက္ အခမ္းအနားတခု ဗဟိုဌာနခ်ဳပ္တြင္ က်င္းပၿပီး ယမန္ေန႔က စစ္ အစုိးရ ေၾကညာသည့္ ဖြဲ႕စည္းပံုမူၾကမ္း ဆႏၵခံယူပြဲရလဒ္ကို လက္မခံေၾကာင္းႏွင့္ ေဒၚေအာင္ ဆန္းစုၾကည္ကို အျမန္ဆံုးလႊတ္ေပးရန္ ေတာင္းဆိုေၾကာင္း ေၾကညာသည္။

ျမန္မာ့ဒီမိုကေရစီေခါင္းေဆာင္ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ လြတ္ေျမာက္ေရး အတြက္ အမ်ိဳးသားဒီမိုကေရစီ အဖြဲ႕ခ်ဳပ္ (အန္အယ္လ္ဒီ) လူငယ္အဖြဲ႕က ဦးေဆာင္ၿပီး ယေန႔ ေန႔လယ္ပိုင္းတြင္ လူ ၅၀ ခန္႔ လမ္းေလ်ွာက္ခ်ီတက္ ဆႏၵျပၾကရာ အာဏာပိုင္မ်ားက ၿဖိဳခြဲ ဖမ္းဆီးလိုက္ေၾကာင္း သိရသည္။
ရန္ကုန္ၿမိဳ႕ ဗဟန္းၿမိဳ႕နယ္ အန္အယ္လ္ဒီ ႐ုံးခ်ဳပ္ေရွ႕မွ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ ေနအိမ္ ေရွ႕အထိ ဦးတည္၍ ေန႔လယ္ ၁ နာရီခန္႔က စတင္လမ္းေလွ်ာက္ခ်ီတက္ ဆႏၵျပသူမ်ားမွာ ျမရိပ္ညိဳ ဟိုတယ္ ႏွင့္ ဟာမစ္တစ္ ကားမွတ္ တိုင္အနီး ကမၻာေအး ဘုရားလမ္းမေပၚ၌ ဖမ္းဆီးခံလိုက္ရေၾကာင္း မ်က္ျမင္ သက္ေသတဦးက ေျပာသည္။
“လုံထိန္းေတြနဲ႔ ႀကံ့ဖြံ႕လို စြမ္းအားရွင္လို အဖြဲ႕ေတြက ဖမ္းတာ၊ တုတ္ေတြ ဒိုင္းေတြနဲ႔ ႐ိုက္ရိုက္လို႔လည္း ေျပာတယ္၊ ရဲ ကား ၂ စီးေပၚေခၚတင္သြားတယ္၊ ၁၅ ေယာက္ ၁၆ ေယာက္ေလာက္ ပါသြားတယ္၊ အဖမ္းခံရတဲ့ အထဲမွာ ေတာင္ဒဂုန္က မထက္ထက္ ဦးေဝလည္း ပါတယ္၊ တခ်ိဳ႕ လည္း ထြက္ေျပးၾကတယ္၊ ဖမ္းတဲ့လုံထိန္းေတြက ရဲ တပ္ရင္း (၈) ကလို႔ ၾကားတယ္”ဟု ၎က ေျပာျပသည္။
အဖမ္းခံရသူမ်ားတြင္ မထက္ထက္ဦးေဝအျပင္ ကိုရန္ႏိုင္ထြန္း၊ မျပည့္ျပည့္၊ ကိုထြန္းထြန္းဝင္းႏွင့္ ဆရာကိုေအာင္ေဖ စသူတို႔လည္း ပါဝင္ေၾကာင္း သိရသည္။
ဆႏၵျပသူမ်ားက အန္အယ္လ္ဒီ တူညီဝတ္စုံမ်ား ဝတ္ဆင္ထားၿပီး ခေမာက္မ်ားကိုလည္း ေဆာင္းထားေၾကာင္း၊ “ဒုကၡသည္ မ်ားကို ကယ္တင္ၾက” “ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ ခ်က္ခ်င္းလႊတ္” စသည္ျဖင့္ ေႂကြးေၾကာ္ၾကေၾကာင္း၊ ပိတ္စ အျဖဴေပၚတြင္ အနီေရာင္ႏွင့္ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္ ကို ခ်က္ခ်င္းလႊတ္ေပး ဟူေသာ စာမ်ားေရးထား သည့္ ဆိုင္းဘုတ္တခုကိုလည္း ကိုင္ေဆာင္ထားေၾကာင္း အန္အယ္လ္ဒီ အဖြဲ႕ဝင္ လူငယ္ တဦးကေျပာဆုိသည္။
ထို႔သို႔ ဆႏၵျပသူမ်ား လမ္းေလွ်ာက္ဆႏၵျပသည့္ ေ႐ႊဂုံတိုင္ႏွင့္ ဟာမစ္တစ္တေၾကာ ကမၻာေအးဘုရား လမ္းေပၚတြင္ လုံထိန္း ရဲ ကားမ်ား၊ မီးသတ္ကားမ်ားျဖင့္ အာဏာပိုင္မ်ားက လုံၿခံဳေရးထူထပ္စြာခ်ထားသည္ဟုလည္း မ်က္ျမင္ သက္ေသမ်ားက ေျပာသည္။
“ေ႐ႊဂုံတိုင္နဲ႔ ဟာမစ္တစ္ တေၾကာလုံးမွာ လုံၿခံဳေရးက မီးသတ္ကားေတြရွိတယ္၊ လုံထိန္းေတြက တ႐ုတ္က ထုတ္တဲ့ကား ေတြနဲ႔ ေ႐ႊဂုံတိုင္မွာပဲ ၁၂ စီးေတြ႕တယ္၊ စစ္ကားေတာ့ လုံးဝမေတြ႕ရဘူး”ဟု ျမင္ေတြ႕ခဲ့ရသူ တဦးက ေျပာသည္။
ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္၏ ေနအိမ္ေရွ႕တြင္လည္း ရဲကား ၊ မီးသတ္ကား၊ အခ်ဳပ္ကားမ်ားျဖင့္ လုံၿခံဳေရး ထူထပ္စြာခ်ထား သည္ကို ေတြ႕ျမင္ခဲ့ရသည္ဟု ၎က ဆက္ေျပာသည္။
ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္သည္ ၂၀၀၃ ခုႏွစ္ ေမလတြင္ ျဖစ္ပြားခဲ့ေသာ ဒီပဲယင္း အၾကမ္းဖက္တိုက္ခိုက္မႈအၿပီးမွ စတင္၍ ေနအိမ္အက်ယ္ခ်ဳပ္ျဖင့္ ထိန္းသိမ္းခံေနရသည္မွာ ၅ ႏွစ္ ရွိၿပီျဖစ္သည္။ ၁၉၈၉ ခုႏွစ္မွစ၍ ေနအိမ္ အက်ယ္ခ်ဳပ္ ဘဝျဖင့္ ေနရခ်ိန္ စုစုေပါင္းမွာ ၁၂ ႏွစ္ေက်ာ္ၿပီျဖစ္သည္။
စစ္အစိုးရက သတ္မွတ္ထားသည့္ ထိန္းသိမ္း ခ်ဳပ္ေႏွာင္ကာလသည္ ေမလ ၂၄ ရက္ေန႔တြင္ ၅ ႏွစ္ တိတိ ျပည့္ေျမာက္ ခဲ့ၿပီျဖစ္ေသာေၾကာင့္ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္အား ခ်က္ခ်င္းျပန္လႊတ္ရန္ ႏိုင္ငံေရးအက်ဥ္းသားမ်ား ကူညီေစာင့္ေရွာက္ေရး အသင္း (AAPP) က ေမလ ၂၄ ရက္ေန႔စြဲျဖင့္ ေၾကညာခ်က္ထုတ္ျပန္၍ ေတာင္းဆိုထားသည္။
အေမရိကန္ ႏိုင္ငံ လူ႔အခြင့္အေရးအဖြဲ႕တခုျဖစ္ေသာ (Freedom Now) အဖြဲ႕မွ ဥပေဒပညာရွင္ ေရွ႕ေန ဂ်ာရက္ဒ္ ဂန္ဆာႏွင့္ မဂၢန္ ဘာ႐ြန္ တို႔ကလည္း ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံ ဥပေဒေၾကာင္းအရ ေမလ ၂၄ ရက္ေန႔ ည သန္းေခါင္ယံတြင္ ခ်ဳပ္ေႏွာင္ကာလ ၿပီးဆုံး ၿပီျဖစ္ေသာေၾကာင့္ ေဒၚေအာင္ဆန္းစုၾကည္အား ျပန္လည္လႊတ္ေပးရန္ လြန္ခဲ့သည့္ ေသာၾကာေန႔က ေၾကညာခ်က္တေစာင္ ထုတ္ျပန္၍ စစ္အစိုးရသို႔ ေတာင္းဆိုလိုက္သည္။

Burma's junta has arrested 20 people trying to march to the home of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on the day her latest year-long stretch of house arrest is due to expire, a witness and opposition sources said.
The youth members of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) had been trying to get to the detained Nobel laureate's home, which has been sealed off by barbed-wired barricades at the nearest major junction, the sources said.
A Reuters reporter saw at least six police trucks, a prison van and a fire engine parked near the NLD headquarters before a ceremony to mark the latest phase of Suu Kyi's house arrest.
There has been no word on the detention order, although few expect the military to do anything but roll it over, even though such a move is bound to create tensions with Western nations who have promised millions of dollars in cyclone aid.
Donors pledged nearly $US50 million in aid at a landmark conference on Sunday in the wake of Cyclone Nargis, which has left 134,000 people dead or missing and another 2.4 million clinging to survival in the Irrawaddy delta.
Aung San Suu Kyi has spent more than 12 of the last 18 years in prison or under house arrest. Her latest stretch of detention started "for her own protection" after clashes between her supporters and pro-junta thugs near the town of Depayin on May 30, 2003.
However, her formal house arrest under a state security law did not start until November 27 of that year. It was renewed once for six months, and has since been renewed every year on or around May 27.
Suu Kyi's party won more than 80 per cent of seats in a 1990 election, but was denied power by the military, which has ruled Burma since a 1962 coup.
'Sham' referendum
Meanwhile Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition party has rejected the outcome of Burma's referendum on a military-backed constitution, calling the approval of the text a "sham".
"The referendum is not free and fair," the National League for Democracy (NLD) said in its first official reaction to the junta's claim of victory.
"Although the NLD is ready to accept the verdict of the people, based on their free will, it will not be able to accept the sham referendum of the authorities," the party said in a statement.
The party also denounced the regime for holding the referendum in the wake of Cyclone Nargis.
The regime claims that despite the devastation, 98 per cent of voters turned out for the referendum and more than 92 per cent endorsed their charter.

ရခိုင္ျပည္နယ္ ေတာင္ကုတ္ျမိဳ႕တြင္ ေမလ ၁၉ ရက္ေန႕က ဆႏၵခံယူပြဲ ရလဒ္အား ဆန္႕က်င္ကန္႕ကြက္ေသာ ဆႏၵျပ ပြဲတရပ္ ေပၚေပါက္ခဲ့သည္။
ဆႏၵျပပြဲအား အမ်ိဳးသားဒီမုိကေရစီ အဖြဲ႕ခ်ဳပ္ လူငယ္မ်ားႏွင့္ အမ်ိဳးသမီး အဇြဲ႕၀င္မ်ားက စီစဥ္ျပဳလုပ္ျခင္း ျဖစ္ျပီး အင္အား ၂၀၀ ခန္႕ ပါ၀င္ခ်ီတက္ ဆႏၵျပခဲ့ၾကျခင္း ျဖစ္သည္။
ဆႏၵျပသူမ်ားသည္ “နိဳး” အမွတ္တံဆိပ္ပါ ဆႏၵခံယူပြဲအား ဆန္႕က်င္သည့္ တီရွပ္မ်ားအား ၀တ္ဆင္ျပီး ဦးဥတၱမ လမ္းမွ ကိုင္းရွည္ ဘုန္းေတာ္ၾကီးေက်ာင္းထ္ိ ေရခ်မ္းအိုးမ်ားကို ကိုယ္စီရြက္ပီး ခ်ီတက္ဆႏၵျပခဲ့ၾကျခင္း ျဖစ္သည္။
ေတာင္ကုတ္ျမိဳ႕နယ္တြင္ ျပည္သူ အမ်ားစုက ဆန္႕က်င္ကန္႕ကြက္မဲေပးခဲ့ၾကေသာ္လည္း သက္ဆိုင္ရာ အာဏာပိုင္မ်ားက ကန္႕ကြက္မဲမ်ားအား ေထာက္ခံမဲမ်ား အျဖစ္ ျပဳလုပ္သည့္ သာမက မဲရလဒ္အားလည္း လိ္မ္လည္ထုတ္ျပန္ခဲ့ေၾကာင္း သတင္းရရွိသည္။

၎က “ေခါင္မိုးပြင့္ထြက္သြားတယ္။ ၀ါယာေလွ်ာ့ ျဖစ္တာလုိ႔ ေျပာတာပဲ။ အျပင္ဘက္ကေန လွမ္းၾကည့္ရင္ ျမင္ရတဲ့အတြင္းပိုင္းက လူေနတဲ့ေဆာက္အအုံ အျဖဴအေဟာင္းႀကီးေလ။ ေဆးေတြကြာေနတဲ့ အေဆာက္အအုံႀကီး အမိုးေတြ အကုန္ပြင့္သြားတယ္။ မည္းတူးေနတာပဲ။ အတြင္းဘက္ကအကုန္လံုးပါသြားတယ္။ ဗီဇာဆက္ရွင္ရွိတဲ့ အေဆာက္အအုံမဟုတ္ဘူး။ မီးသတ္ကားအႀကီး (၄) စီး၊ အေသး (၂) စီး၊ ေဆး႐ံုကား (၁) စီးနဲ႔ ရဲေတြ႐ႈပ္ယွက္ခတ္ေနတာပဲ” ဟု ေျပာသည္။

ထို႔ေနာက္ ေတာ္လွန္ေရးတာဝန္မ်ားကို အဆင့္ဆင့္ထမ္းေဆာင္ခဲ့ရာ ၂၀၀၀ ျပည့္ႏွစ္ (၁၂) ႀကိမ္ ေျမာက္ ေကအန္ယူကြန္ဂရက္တြင္ ဥကၠ႒အျဖစ္ ေရြးခ်ယ္ခံခဲ့ရၿပီး ၂၀၀၄ ခု (၁၃) ႀကိမ္ေျမာက္ ေကအန္ယူကြန္ဂရက္တြင္လည္း ထပ္မံေရြးခ်ယ္ခံရကာ ကြယ္လြန္ခ်ိန္အထိ ကရင္အမ်ဳိးသား အစည္းအ႐ံုး ဥကၠ႒တာဝန္ကို ထမ္းေဆာင္ခဲ့သည္။
၁၉၈၈ ခုတြင္ ျမန္မာျပည္ ဒီမိုကရက္တစ္ မဟာမိတ္အဖြဲ႔ခ်ဳပ္ (ဒီေအဘီ) အလုပ္အမႈေဆာင္ႏွင့္ ၂၀၀၄-၂၀၀၈ ခုႏွစ္အထိ အႀကံေပးအျဖစ္ ေဆာင္ရြက္ခဲ့သည္။
၎သည္ ၂၀၀၀ ျပည့္ႏွစ္မွ ၂၀၀၈ ခုအထိ အမ်ဳိးသားဒီမိုကေရစီတပ္ေပါင္းစု (အန္ဒီအက္ဖ္)၏ ဥကၠ႒အျဖစ္လည္းေကာင္း၊ ၂၀၀၁ ခုမွ ၂၀၀၈ ခုအထိ တိုင္းရင္းသားလူမ်ဳိးမ်ားေကာင္စီ (အီးအန္စီ) ၏ ဥကၠ႒အျဖစ္လည္းေကာင္း၊ ၂၀၀၂ ခုမွ ၂၀၀၈ ခုအထိ ျပည္ေထာင္စုျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံ အမ်ဳိးသားေကာင္စီ (အန္စီယူဘီ) သဘာပတိအဖြဲ႔ဝင္ႏွင့္ ဒု-ဥကၠ႒ (၁) တာဝန္မ်ားကို ထမ္းေဆာင္ခဲ့သည္။
၎အား အဖ ေစာဘစိန္၊ အမိ ေနာ္သိန္းျမတ္တို႔မွ ဧရာဝတီတိုင္း ဟသၤာတၿမိဳ႕တြင္ ၁၉၂၇ ခု မတ္လ (၁၁) ရက္တြင္ ေမြးဖြားခဲ့ၿပီး ေမြးခ်င္းေမာင္ႏွမ (၉) ေယာက္ရွိသည့္အနက္ ဒုတိယေျမာက္ သားျဖစ္သည္။
ကရင့္အမ်ဳိးသားေတာ္လွန္ေရးအေပၚ ထားရွိသည့္ သူ၏သေဘာထားႏွင့္ပတ္သက္၍ ပဒိုေစာဘ သင္စိန္က " ကရင့္ေတာ္လွန္ေရးဟာ ဘယ္လိုပဲ အခက္အခဲေတြ ႀကံဳရ ႀကံဳရ၊ ဘယ္လိုအေျခ အေနမ်ဳိးပဲ ေရာက္ေနပါေစ ေတာ္လွန္ေရးကို အသက္ဆံုးတဲ့အထိ က်ေနာ္လုပ္သြားမယ္။ က်ေနာ္ အသက္ႀကီးပါၿပီ၊ ဒါေပမယ့္ စိတ္မပ်က္ဘူး၊ ဇြဲမေလွ်ာ့ဘူး။ ေတာ္လွန္ေရးတာဝန္ကို က်ေနာ္ တတ္ႏိုင္သေလာက္ လုပ္သြားမယ္။ ေျခတဖက္တတ္ႏိုင္ရင္ ေျခတဖက္၊ လက္တဖက္တတ္ႏိုင္ရင္ လက္တဖက္၊ ေျခေတြလက္ေတြ မတတ္ႏိုင္ရင္လည္း တတ္ႏိုင္တဲ့ ဦးေႏွာက္နဲ႔လုပ္မယ္။ ေနာက္ဆံုး က်ေနာ့္ ဦးေႏွာက္တျခမ္း ေကာင္းေနေသးရင္ေတာင္ အဲဒီဦးေႏွာက္တျခမ္းနဲ႔ပဲ ေတာ္လွန္ေရးကို က်ေနာ္ လုပ္သြားမယ္" ဟု ၎မကြယ္လြန္ခင္တြင္ ေျပာၾကားခဲ့ဖူးသည္။

A fire destroyed a floor at Myanmar's embassy in the Thai capital on Monday.
Four fire engines rushed to the embassy as plumes of smoke rose from inside the walled compound, located in a busy business district of Bangkok. The blaze was put out in about one hour. No injuries were reported.
A fire brigade official, Anupon Saengdara, said the cause was not known. But a man at the embassy identifying himself only as a consular official said faulty wiring sparked the fire.
Pol. Lt. Thanapat Sirawong said the blaze engulfed the second floor of the embassy's main, colonial-style building, totally damaging the floor and sections of the roof.
The area outside the compound is the site of frequent but peaceful demonstrations by Myanmar activists against the military regime in their neighboring homeland.
The visa section of the embassy is located in the building that caught fire. In the last three weeks, aid workers and others often crowded into the section trying to obtain hard-to-get visas to isolationist Myanmar to help victims of a devastating cyclone.

Burma junta tells survivors to go home

In the absence of proper help from their own government, tens of thousands of people rendered homeless by the storm have erected makeshift roadside huts along the raised concrete roads that run through the Irrawaddy delta. Their location means they are less at risk from further flooding, and puts them on hand for donations from any passing aid convoy.
Now, despite claims by the Burmese government that it is doing more to assist with relief efforts, aid workers say that police in the delta areas have been ordering destitute villagers to dismantle the shelters, apparently unhappy at the image which the sprawling roadside shanty towns presents to the outside world.
Occupants have been told to return to their homes in outlying areas, even though many are scared to do so for fear of another cyclone striking. "We are afraid of staying in our former villages – even the dogs are scared when the wind blows," one woman said.

Burmese villagers line roads waiting for aid

In village after village of the Irrawaddy Delta in southern Myanmar, people line the roads. They endure the sweltering morning sun, the afternoon monsoon rains and the storm-pregnant evening skies, under which their ghostly figures are illuminated by thunderbolts.
When an occasional car carrying donations approaches, children swarm toward it holding out their hands. Mothers hugging babies, too ashamed or shocked to ask for help, just stare into the eyes of any visitors. Fathers and grandmothers stand by, watching the scene with eyes filled with humiliation.
Every family has tales of horror to tell about Cyclone Nargis, which struck the delta on May 3. But for now, a powerful instinct for survival has driven these Burmese peasants to leave their once-fertile but now ruined rice paddies and migrate toward the nearest roads. Neither government nor international aid is coming quickly enough, if at all, to these roads. For many, the only hope of survival is aid being brought through by private donors.
"I don't know how the government is helping us," said Ko Htay Oo, 40, in Kunyangon, a delta town 50 kilometers, or 30 miles, south of Yangon, Myanmar's main city. "There are cars coming with private donations. Some get donations, some don't.
"I am no beggar, so I didn't eat anything in the past two days," he said, leaning against a roadside palm tree. "Besides, you shouldn't compete with kids for begged food."
On the roads going through the storm-hit area, the ruling military junta, which has driven Myanmar's people into squalor but keeps them docile with terror, has put up this sign: "Don't throw food on the roads. It ruins the people's good habits."
Of the nearly two dozen people interviewed this past weekend along the roads, all said they got little, if any, relief from their government. All said they did not expect any because they are not used to that kind of help from the junta. Few have heard about foreign aid flowing in. None have seen any.
The most visible government presence appeared in the form of the occasional police jeep.
With the roads, not the rice paddies, having become a source of food, villagers are building their lives along them with whatever they have left. Pigs are tied to roadside palm trees. Ducks swim in the nearby ditches. Roads are lined with the flimsy A-frame huts built with a few sticks of bamboo and "dani" leaves for roofing. One man found shelter in a large bamboo basket he had salvaged from the floodwater. Another lived in a tent built with a plastic Tiger Beer advertising banner that a truck driver had thrown to him.
The roads are littered with plastic garbage, from the packaging of donated food.
"I have no dish, no cup, no blanket, no pillow. I have received nothing from the government," said Daw San Mar Oo, 31, a farmer in the hamlet of Nyin Kone near Daedaya, a delta town southwest of Kunyangon. "I have nothing in my hands."
U Min Lwin, 37, said his family had received a government ration only twice in the three weeks since the storm, each time seven cups of rice.
Farther down the road, a 51-year-old woman who gave her name as Daw San said that she received potatoes and a small amount of beans from the government the other day but that she had no utensils for cooking.
The most helpless victims of Nargis, which sent monstrous walls of saltwater over the low-lying delta, were the poorest of Burmese farmers - those who rent rice paddies from landlords. Before the storm, they and their buffaloes, ducks and pigs had moved from field to field, living in huts beside their paddies.
In contrast to the obvious physical devastation of the Chinese earthquake, which left piles of concrete or natural debris behind, here in the Irrawaddy Delta's vast rice fields, after the sea water had subsided, it might appear to visitors that nothing had happened. But the survivors lining the roads tell a different story.
"My neighbors, their houses, their buffaloes - they are all gone," said Ma Aye Swe, 48. "They are gone with the water."
In their isolation, these farmers rely on news from static-filled radio broadcasts to link them to the outside world, and many appeared to have little notion of international aid or what a government could do for them at times of national disaster. Private aid runners say that when they hand out cakes of soap, some of the farmers do not even know what they are for.
The authorities are, in the wake of the storm, a source of intimidation.
