Ban flies to Thailand ahead of meeting junta

ABC News

United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon will arrive in Thailand this evening ahead of a planned visit to cyclone-ravaged Burma.

Mr Ban is hoping to be able to convince Burma's military leaders to agree to a wider international aid effort.

The UN estimates that fewer than a quarter of the estimated 2.4 million Burmese in need since cyclone Nargis struck 19 days ago have received assistance.

The junta has agreed to help from the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), but is still reluctant to allow western aid workers into hard-hit areas.

It is believed that 134,000 people have died.

Mr Ban will meet members of Thailand's government tonight.

Thailand was one of the first countries allowed to deliver aid.

Mr Ban heads to Burma tomorrow and will meet junta leader Than Shwe on Friday.
