A Canadian military plane carrying 2,000 emergency shelter kits for victims of the May 2 cyclone in Myanmar landed in Bangkok Saturday morning. The International Red Cross was to take the shipment from there, getting it to the Rangoon Region and distributing the kits to people in the affected areas.
Each shelter kit, designed by the International Federation of the Red Cross, contains two tarpaulins and a set of basic tools, including a shovel, rope, hammer, nails and hand saw. The kits are part of the initial $2 million commitment Canada made to respond to the crisis.
Cyclone Nargis is turning out to be one of the most devastating to ever hit Asia, as the toll of dead and missing rises above 133,000. On Friday the military junta in Myanmar, formerly Burma, raised its toll from the disaster to 77,738 dead and 55,917 missing, though British officials say the actual toll may already be more than 200,000, news agencies reported.
And with the junta refusing to admit large-scale relief efforts for the estimated 2.5 million people left devastated in the Irrawaddy delta region, experts say the death tolls could rise even more dramatically, news agencies said.
The government has been admitting aid flights to Yangon, but aid agencies say only a fraction of the required relief is getting through.
