Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb says that he would like to see more transparent election laws in place before next year's European Parliament elections. In a discussion with YLE, the Foreign Minister also said actions by the regime in Myanmar are close to a violation of human rights.
Stubb described the present election campaign financing system in Finland as "secretive" and said that it is good that a public debate came up recently about political campaign financing. He told YLE TV1 on Saturday that he himself knows who the contributors to his European Parliament election campaign were.
Need for open debate
During the discussion, Stubb said that he wants to see an open parliamentary debate and initiatives concerning foreign policy from both committees and researchers.
The Foreign Minister stressed the view that the EU and NATO cannot be separated in debate, even though efforts are made to do so.
He pointed out that Finland is acting in accordance with the government's programme and preparing a report on foreign and security policy. Stubb added that any decision on NATO membership will not be rushed into pell-mell, but rather after careful consideration.
Myanmar junta approaching violation of human rights
Foreign Minister Stubb also expressed the view that the military regime in Myanmar is close to the limit marking violations of human rights by refusing to allow aid deliveries to cyclone victims.
However, Stubb did not consider it possible that aid would be taken in by a NATO Rapid Response Force against the will of the junta.
