Laos presents assistance to Myanmar's cyclone victims

HANOI, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The Lao government has presented funds totaling 20,000 U.S. dollars and 2.5 tons of food aid to the Myanmar government to help over 20,000 victims of Cyclone Nargis, which hit the country last weekend, Lao newspaper Vientiane Times reported Thursday.

A Lao taskforce representing the government, led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bounkeuth Sangsomsak, on Wednesday flew to Yangon of Myanmar, to present the donations. The food aid included noodles, canned fish, packaged soup and drinking water.

Lao President Choummaly Sayasone and Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh have sent messages of sympathy to the Myanmar government.

The death toll in the violent cyclone which swept Myanmar last weekend rose to nearly 23,000 and the number of missing increased to 42,119, Myanmar state radio reported Wednesday.
