Thailand's Ministry of Public Health ''MOPH'' has sent three tonnes of medicine, medical supplies, and food to cyclone victims in Myanmar.

MOPH Permanent Secretary Dr. Prat Boonyawongvirot on Wednesday observed a send-off ceremony dispatching medicine and medical supplies valued at Bt5 million (US$157,000) to help cyclone Nargis victims in Myanmar.

Dr. Prat said local public health officials have been working with Myanmar authorities officials to prevent diseases along the common border but in Yangon, Thai medical personnel are ready to help if asked.

The health chief also asked the public to donate drinking water machines to the Royal Thai Air Force to transport them to help people in affected areas.

The Red Cross also sent 12 tonnes of food, drinking water, and other necessities to Myanmar.

The public health ministry has worked closely with Myanmar in the past although it faces difficulty due to communication problems, he said.

Thailand's health ministry has arranged 20 mobile medical teams and 20 teams of disease survey experts trained to detect emerging health issues in localities. They are ready to travel to Myanmar immediately if requested by that country's government, he added. (TNA)
