Asean Chief Meets Myanmar PM On Cyclone Aid

Nasdaq

YANGON (AFP)--The secretary general of Asean met Wednesday with Myanmar's prime minister to discuss a new regional effort to coordinate international aid for cyclone victims, the group said in a statement.

Surin Pitsuwan met for 45 minutes with Prime Minister Thein Sein to explain how the new aid mechanism would work, said the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which includes Myanmar.

Details of the effort have not been made public, but Surin urged Thein Sein to quickly take steps to ease the situation for two million people still in need of housing, food and medicine nearly three weeks after the cyclone.

"He stressed that the expeditious execution of these steps would create an atmosphere of mutual confidence among all parties concerned," the statement said.

"This will ensure the success of the tremendous tasks at hand." Asean and the United Nations are set to host a donor meeting Sunday in Myanmar's main city Yangon to raise funds for cyclone recovery.

Cyclone Nargis left 133,000 dead or missing, and Myanmar estimates the damage at more than $10 billion.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Bangkok Wednesday en route to Myanmar, where he said he will meet with junta leader Than Shwe to convince the country to accept a full-scale cyclone relief operation.
