Two S'pore medical teams leave for Myanmar on Thursday

The straits Times May 21, 2008 Wednesday

TWO Singapore medical teams will leave for cyclone-hit Myanmar on Thursday to help in relief effort.

They are among the first foreign medical aid Myanmar is allowing into the disaster area, following a decision by the ruling junta to accept help from Asean.

The six-men teams, one from each of the two public health clusters, will be taking medicines with them. They are not the first help from Singapore, though.

Last week, a team from the Singapore Red Cross and another from the Salvation Army were granted visas to enter the disaster-hit nation.

On May 2, cyclone Nargis swept through the low-lying Irrawaddy delta, destroying vast tracts of land. About 100,000 people are known to have died in its aftermath.

Myanmar's military junta has been slow in accepting foreign aid, but recently opened its doors a little.

The Singapore Government has pledged US$200,000 to help victims there.
