BERLIN, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Germany announced on Wednesday to double its humanitarian aid to Myanmar to 1 million euros (about 1.53 million U.S. dollars) as the death toll of the violent cyclone storm climbed to nearly 23,000 people in the country.

German Foreign Ministry said the funds will be primarily used to provide drinking water, shelter, food and medical care in the cyclone-hit areas.

"Germany is very concerned about the increasing scale of the disaster in Myanmar. To help the injured and homeless people should be the priority with the supply of drinking water and medicines particularly urgent," said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

According to the latest reports by Myanmar's state radio, about 22,980 people have been killed in two divisions of Yangon and Ayeyawaddy in a violent cyclone storm Nargis that swept Myanmar's five divisions and states on Friday and Saturday.
