WASHINGTON, May 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush issued an executive order on Thursday to impose new sanctions on Myanmar.

"I have signed a new Executive Order that will block all property and interests in property of designated individuals and entities determined to be owned or controlled by, directly or indirectly, the Government of Burma (Myanmar) or an official or officials of the Government of Burma," Bush said in a statement.

"This new Executive Order expands existing authorities that allow the United States Government to target those who are responsible for supporting, empowering, and enriching the Burmese regime," Bush said.

The United States imposed additional sanctions on Myanmar last year when unrest broke out in the country in September. The Myanmar authorities accused internal and external anti-government forces as well as some leading Western broadcasting stations of inciting the disturbances.
