Life in Arakan Challenged by Rains

Narinjara News

Sittwe: Regular people in Sittwe and other towns in Arakan State have been having difficulty maintaining their daily lives recently after severe downpours have affected the region.

A townsperson from Sittwe said, "The week-long downpour caused difficulties to maintain the daily life of poor families in Sittwe, and many people are unable to work outside to earn money due to the heavy rain."

The storms have been non-stop around Arakan for three weeks, and many places around the state are becoming waterlogged.

Many roads in Arakan, including the Sittwe-Rangoon highway and the Kyaukpru-Rangoon road have been damaged and blocked by landslides after the severe rains.

At the same time, commodity prices in Arakan are rising after transportation has been disrupted between Rangoon and Sittwe because of the highway collapse.

"I heard many poor families in the outskirts of Sittwe are facing a shortage of food, and some are facing hunger as they can not look for money outside to survive," the person said.

Two weeks ago, a three-member family in Sittwe committed suicide by eating poisoned rice a few days after facing severe hunger.

The resident said that if the rains continue like this in the future, poor people will face even more difficulties surviving.

Arakan State is situated in the coastal area and every year has heavy rains in the monsoon season, but this year's rainy season has been unusual, with the rains staring earlier and being more severe than in previous years.
