An anti-referendum paper was distributed in Akyab, Kyaukpru and Rambe towns in Arakan recently.
The distributed anti-referendum paper was written by hand and it was circulated at places where people gather like the jetty, bus station, market and other places. It has no date and nor the name of the distributor.
The first anti-referendum paper was found by the police from the jetty in Rambe on April 24 about 9:20 p.m. (Burmese standard Time) and on April 25, the paper was found in Kyaukpru and on April 26, it was found in Akyab, said a said from police of Rambe.
“The paper describes the referendum where the SPDC is forcefully trying to get the draft constitution approved by the people. The law was created by SPDC's hand picked representatives in the sham National Convention without the people's participation. This will not usher in real democracy and it will only legitimize the power hungry military junta. It also exhorts people to oppose the forthcoming May 10 referendum,” said a local from Kyaukpru.
"After finding the paper, the authorities tightened security in the town and are keeping an eye on the people's activity. The Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA) members are doing the rounds of the town to control the situation," said a student in Akyab.
