Photo of Nagai wins Pulitzer

THE ASAHI SHIMBUN
NEW YORK--Reuters won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography Monday for a picture of vieographer Kenji Nagai as he lay mortally wounded while covering a military crackdown on protests in Myanmar (Burma).

The photograph, snapped by Adrees Latif, 34, shows Nagai, 50, lying sprawled on the ground but still holding his videocam aloft and focusing on a street demonstration in Yangon (Rangoon) last September.

The picture also showed a Burmese soldier pointing a rifle at Nagai and police chasing fleeing protesters.

Latif expressed his gratitude that the award would ensure the picture remained etched in people's memories, Reuters said. He also said he hopes the picture will serve as a memorial to Nagai, the news agency said.
