Sri Lanka Trade Minister comes home with 50,000 MT of rice from Myanmar

Sri Lanka News
Apr 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister, Bandula Gunawardena returned home from an official tour in Myanmar with 50,000 MT of rice, government sources said.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa made the request to get the rice stock from Myanmar to ease the burden on the public due to escalating rice prices.

Myanmar has agreed to provide more rice in a three months time if Sri Lanka needed. However, Sri Lankan government is optimistic that next rice harvest will bring the rice prices down by then.

According to the sources the Myanmar government has already arranged a ship to export the rice while Sri Lanka has also sent a ship to Myanmar to bring the rice. Several ships are to be deployed to bring the whole stock of rice to Sri Lanka. Global rice prices have risen steadily as the stocks have reached a 25-year low.
