A Burmese soldier was stabbed to death in a clash among Burmese soldiers during the water festival in Buthidaung, 80 miles north of Arakan State capital Sittwe, according to an official report.
The victim has been identified as Wai Moe from Light Infantry Battalion 353 based in Buthidaung.
A witness said the incident took place near the central market in Buthidaung on 16 April when four soldiers came to the area to participate in the water festival that lasted from 13 April to 17 April.
The murder was committed by private soldier Hla Myo, who stabbed Wai Moe with a nine-inch long knife during a quarrel. Wai Moe was first admitted to Buthidaung hospital but soon after was moved to Maungdaw district hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Wai Moe died at Maungdaw hospital with his injuries on 17 April.
After the incident, the army authorities arrested three soldiers, including Hla Myo and another two soldiers in connection with the murder.
