Myanmar residents rally again outside embassy for right to vote

Kyodo News Monday, April 28, 2008

Some 230 Myanmar residents of Japan and others gathered Sunday in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, to demand the right to vote in a national referendum on establishing a new constitution in their homeland.

The move followed a clash Saturday between Myanmar nationals and police in which one protester was arrested and 13 people were injured.

On Sunday, people holding up photographs of Myanmar prodemocracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi lined up in front of the embassy and shouted "Let us vote" and "We do not need the constitution by the military government."

A 41-year-old Myanmar man believed to be a senior official of a prodemocracy group in Japan was arrested in Saturday's clash, which occurred as police tried to move the Myanmar residents and others away from the embassy.

Myanmar will hold a national referendum May 10 on a bill to establish a new constitution, and Sunday was the last day for overseas voting.

Prodemocracy Myanmar residents of Japan say they were barred from voting in the overseas balloting as they received no notification from the Myanmar government.

Many prodemocracy Myanmar residents refuse to pay taxes to the military government and a number have expired passports, group officials said.
