YANGON - Myanmar's military rulers announced on state television late Wednesday they would hold a referendum on their proposed constitution on May 10 which they say will clear the way for elections in 2010. "The nationwide referendum will be held on May 10, 2008," state television said, quoting a two-sentence statement by Aung Toe, chairman of the commission tasked with organising the referendum.
The statement said the decision was made earlier Wednesday during a meeting of the commission in the remote capital Naypyidaw, and gave no other details.
