Laura Bush, the U.S. first lady, has conferred an award honouring the women of military-ruled Burma in their battle to restore democracy and human rights to their country. Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate who has spent more than 12 years under house arrest since 1989, is spearheading the campaign for reform. Charm Tong, member of a women's action group from Shan state where rights groups say the military has systematically raped tribal women, received the award, made by the Vital Voices Global Partnership, on behalf of her compatriots. The non-governmental organization identifies, trains, and empowers emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the globe. "We pay tribute to the people of Burma -- especially the women, who have inspired the world with their grace and courage in the face of brutality," Mrs. Bush, pictured, said at the awards ceremony in Washington.
