About 40 Burmese refugees gathered on Thursday in front of the entrance gate to the UNHCR office in Cox's Bazar to appeal for resettlement of urban Burmese refugees.
Ko Pho Hla, who is an urban refugee in Bangladesh, said, "We came here to appeal to the UNHCR officials to consider the resettlement program for urban Arakanese refugees because we are unable to maintain our daily survival in Bangladesh due to the increase of prices day after day."
The demonstration was held at the UNHCR office in Bangladesh by urban Burmese refugees while five Western envoys were visiting Cox's Bazar to address the problem of Rohingya refugees who are currently living in two refugee camps.
We staged the demonstration here during the Western envoys' trip to Cox's Bazar, but the envoys left for Dhaka before our demonstration took place. However, we revealed our desire for resettlement to the UNHCR office."
Five Western envoys to Bangladesh, including European Commissioner Dr. Stephen Frane, Italian envoy Italla Maria Marta Ochi, Dutch envoy Ria Tan Tushar, Swedish envoy Brith of Horford, and Candian envoy Richardson, visited Cox's Bazar from 21 to 24 April to look for ways of solving the problems of the Rohingya refugees.
"The envoys came to Cox's Bazar to solve the Muslim refugee problem, but there was no plan for considering urban refugees. We had the right to tell the about our problem anyway, so we staged a demonstration in front of the UNHCR gate," said Ko Pho Hla.
In Bangladesh there are over 250 urban refugees, mostly from Burma, but they have had no chance to settle in a third country. They urban refugees are facing many crises in Bangladesh, including providing for their daily survival and accomodation since the UNHRC cut assistance allowances. Because of these problems, many urban refugees are now willing to go to third countries to resettle.
