Bomb blast in Burma causes minor damage

Channelnewsasia October 19, 2008

YANGON - A small bomb exploded near a football field in northeast Yangon late Saturday, a Myanmar police official said, causing minor damage but no injuries.

"No one was hurt or killed in the bomb blast," said a police official who did not want to be named as he was not authorised to talk to the media.

The blast hit at about 8:00 pm (1330 GMT), and police immediately sealed off the area, an AFP correspondent on the scene said.

Saturday's incident follows four blasts last month, one of which killed two people and wounded 10 at a video cafe also northeast of Yangon.

Myanmar's ruling military has in the past blamed similar explosions on armed exile groups or ethnic rebels who have been battling the military rulers for decades.

State-run media has also begun blaming blasts on democracy activists, accusing two members of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) of bombing pro-government offices in July.
